Nicole Fiorellino Awarded Scholarship
Nicole Fiorellino was recently awarded a "Backstretch Scholarship" in the amount of $2,000 from the Maryland Racing Media Association. Although Nicole doesn't work at a MD racetrack, she impressed the scholarship committee with her efforts as manager of our equine rotational grazing demonstration site, which just happens to house 4 off-the-track Thoroughbreds, and with her research efforts to characterize the use of pasture and manure best management practices by MD horse farm operators.

Nicole was also recently awarded a $600 Financial Support Grant from our very own Animal Sciences Graduate Student Association. The money will be used to support travel costs associated with her 60 farm field study that she's currently conducting

Kristina Heuck wins Certificate of Excellence
Kristina Heuck, PhD candidate under the direction of Tom Porter, won a Certificate of Excellence for presentation in the Physiology, Endocrinology, and Reproduction Section at the Poultry Science Association's 98th Annual Meeting on July 23rd, 2009 in Raleigh, N.C.Her research poster entitled "Fine mapping of the glucocorticoid-responsive region of the chicken growth hormone (GH) gene in embryonic pituitary cells" is now eligible to compete for the 2010 Alltech Student Research Manuscript Award. Kristina hopes to complete her dissertation research in the fall of 2009.

The Iager Scholarship
Congratulations to Amanda Heilman, the winner of the 2008-2009 Iager Scholarship! The Judy and Charles Iager Scholarship Fund was established in September 2007 by Judy '66 and Charles '65 Iager. Spendable Income from the Judy and Charles Iager Scholarship Fund provides annual scholarships for students enrolled in the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. - Link

Katherine Robinson named Grand Champion at the 2009 AG Day Livestock Show
After a long day in the sun, Katherine Robinson was selected as Grand Champion of the 2009 AG Day Livestock Show. She was selected from a group of three finalists for her superior showmanship. Congratulations, Katherine!

Jessica Moorefield named Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar for 2008-2009
Congratulations to Jessica Moorefield on being designated a 2008-2009 Philip Merrill Scholar at a banquet held November 15, 2008, at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center. The Merrill Presidential Scholars Program honors the University of Maryland's most successful seniors and their designated University faculty and K-12 teachers for their mentorship. In Jessica's application essay, she identified Dr. Brian J Bequette of our Animal and Avian Sciences Department as her university mentor and her Bowie High School advanced placement psychology teacher Bob Cantor as her K-12 mentor. Jessica is a senior in the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) where she has been named to the university honor roll every semester while maintaining a stellar 3.943 GPA. In addition to academics, Jessica has worked for 3 years in the business office and for the last 1.5 years she has conducted research in Dr Bequette's labs with egg-embryos, beef steers and in spring 2009 she will conduct a study in sheep. The Scholars are selected by academic Colleges and Schools with undergraduate major programs. The Scholars Program has been in existence for 5 years, and for 4 of those years a student from the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences has been designated a Merrill Scholar from the College of AGNR.
